Santa Clara, CA - The San Francisco 49ers signed cornerback Chris Cook to a one-year contract Friday. Cook had spent his entire four-year career in Minnesota, where he racked up 120 tackles, 13 passes defensed and one sack in 34 games, including 29 starts with the Vikings. In 2013, the 27-year-old Virginia product posted a career-high 47 tackles while appearing in 12 games, including 11 as a starter. ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – The Blue Jays remain hopeful that Jose Reyess and Casey Janssens stints on the disabled list will be brief and with that, roster decisions are looming in the next 10 to 14 days. “Ideally, we wouldnt carry three,” said general manager Alex Anthopoulos of the clubs current catching situation. “Its really game-to-game right now.” Dioner Navarro is locked in as the starting catcher and Josh Thole broke camp as the back-up specifically because of his history and comfort level with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Erik Kratz, a late-camp cut, ended up beginning the season with the Blue Jays as Janssens roster replacement. If all else was equal, it would have been Kratz in Tholes spot. The prevailing opinion during spring training was that Kratz would be the backup because, while not a batting average or on-base percentage hitter, Kratz offers a power threat that Thole doesnt. Kratz hit 18 home runs in 375 at-bats playing behind Carlos Ruiz in Philadelphia over the last two seasons. In a pinch-hit at-bat on opening day, his first at-bat as a Blue Jay, Kratz launched a two-run home run over the centre field fence. Thole hit .175/.256/.242 for a .497 OPS last season. A left-handed bat, his insertion into the line-up on days when Dickey lines up against the divisions top left-handers like David Price, CC Sabathia and Jon Lester, creates a significant hole at the bottom of the order. The back-up catcher likely will have to play more this season – Navarro hasnt appeared in more than 89 games since 2009. One wonders if theres wisdom in tying another roster spot to Dickey, one pitcher who throws a specific pitch. “The thing is Josh has had some offensive success,” said Anthopoulos. “I know he didnt have it last year and the second half of the year with the Mets in 2012 but in the past, if you look at it, hes been a .700 OPS guy, he can draw some walks, low strikeout rate, he can put the ball in play and grind out some at-bats.” Anthopoulos cautions against jumping to conclusions, reminding that rosters can be changed in a heartbeat. The Blue Jays could play an 18-inning game, necessitating the recall of a reliever in support of a tired bullpen; somebody else could get hurt. There are a number of variables, a number of possibilities. “Obviously, Josh was the guy who made the team out of spring,” said Anthopoulos. “That hasnt changed at all and well see as the year goes along.” HAPPS ROLE J.A. Happ threw a light side session on Wednesday as he works his way back from a back problem. Hes eligible to come off the disabled list on April 13 and, at the moment, there isnt a spot for Happ in the starting rotation. Anthopoulos hasnt yet approached Happ about being a reliever. “Well deal with all that,” said Anthopoulos. “Hopefully, like anything, we have five starters that are rolling and theyre winning all their games and we have too many starters. Thatd be a great problem to have. Id sign up for that right now. You deal with those things as they come. Everyday something else can happen, in the next 10 days, two weeks. You cant plan that far ahead.” ANTHOPOULOS ISNT SHOPPING FOR INFIELDER A self-explanatory headline. Anthopoulos isnt looking to swing a deal for a middle infielder to support the club while Reyes is out. “We expect Jose to be back somewhat soon,” said Anthopoulos. Assistant coach Glen Gulutzan said Thursday that Edler, who played Tuesday in Nashville, is out indefinitely. The first place Calgary Stampeders play the fourth place Edmonton Eskimos this week which will be another chance with three games to go for Jon Cornish to move toward winning the CFL rushing title. The second place Saskatchewan Roughriders play the third place BC Lions and that will be an opportunity for Kory Sheets to win the CFL rushing title. Three of those four teams are also playoff bound so when do personal goals enhance team goals of winning? Well the way I look at it is that football is a funny sport. Everyone is dependent on everyone else but to be successful there always has to be individual success that is in the public eye. Now coach Hufnagel in Calgary and coach Chamblin in Saskatchewan will have game plans that include both Cornish and Sheets. But they are part of the plan, not THE plan. Having said that there is nothing wrong with highlighting possible individual accomplishments as it motivates all involved to create success for that player. Whether Sheets or Cornish win the title over the next three weeks, all of those involved with take pride in that moment. Those who block, pass and call the plays are all rushing title holders too and as any running back knows he cant do his job effectively unless other do theirs as well. Presently it is pretty close. Cornish had played 14 games, carried the ball 215 times, gained 1,545 yards and has 11 rushing touchdowns. Sheets has played in 13 games, had 251 carries, and has gained 1,408 yards. He also has 11 rushing touchdowns. Is one back better than the other? Not really when you discuss the top four or five. When you compare them to the 10th or lower than absolutely. If you wantt to depend on mathematics than Cornish has gained 137 more yards, has a 1.dddddddddddd.6 yard per carry average better and has 36 less carries. But then Sheets missed a game due to injury so where would he be if he had played that game? The last three weeks of the season are always a little different. You realize time is finite - not infinite - which is what the season looks like back in May. Youre tired in many ways, not dramatically but almost subconsciously. The East and West All-Star teams are to be announced soon. Trust me when I say this, every player wants to be on an All-Star team. Not just for the incentive-based monetary enhancement, more it is acknowledgment of a job well done that your peers are forced to recognize. The end of the season is the end of a journey and one that may not be repeated by any fault of yours. This is when football gets really interesting because you just dont know how the team will play with the success or failure to be determined in a short period of time. I am confident that if you asked either Sheets or Cornish if the choice is Grey Cup Champion or CFL rushing champion they would take the former before the latter. Still there is nothing wrong with going after the individual record because if you get it, it probably means you are a step closer to the ring, which lasts forever. I hope it comes down to the last game. Calgary at BC for Cornish, Edmonton at Saskatchewan for Sheets. Slight advantage for Sheets as he plays on a Saturday, Cornish on the Friday so Sheets will know how many yards he needs. Cornish will get as many as he can. I will be bringing my calculator to work that day. ' ' '

NEWARK, N.J. -- Claude Noel hopes drafting Joshua Morrissey helps the Winnipeg Jets take another step towards strengthening a thin prospect pool. "Were trying to get a cycle of development going," said the Jets head coach. "As a young franchise (that) cycle hasnt completely started." Winnipeg picked Morrissey 13th overall in Sundays NHL draft, and Noel hopes the addition of the defenceman along with the development of young players such as Jacob Trouba and Mark Scheifele quicken the Jets growth next season. "Its really exciting to be part of the Jets organization," said Morrissey. "Its definitely a pretty cool experience. "I always wanted to go to a passionate city and have passionate fans, and I got my wish." The Jets also acquired Michael Frolik from Chicago for the 74th and 134th picks. Frolik recorded 10 points in both the regular and post-season for the Stanley Cup champions, while playing on an energy line. "Frolik fit what we were kind of looking for from a winger standpoint, someone thats a really good penalty-killer, someone that is a former two-time 20-goal scorer at the National Hockey League level," said general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff. "Works extremely hard. You saw how he played in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Thats when he does play his best. Hes someone that really competes and I know will be looking for an expanded role in our group." A mobile defenceman, who said he patterns his game after Norris Trophy finalist Kris Letang, Morrissey recorded 15 goals and 32 assists in 70 games with Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League last season. He also had three assists and 22 penalty minutes in seven games for Canada in the World Under-18s. "I think Im a two-way defenceman with an offensive upside. I like to compete hard and my biggest assets are my skating and my hockey sense," Morrissey said. "I have to work on my defensive game but my offensive side has really flourished." According to Morrissey, he had an inkling that the Jets were interested in him after four meetings. "The meetings with the Jets (were) amazing," Morrissey said. "They were good guys. They had a lot of good things to say. It seemed as we talked, things just clicked. I definitely left there feeling pretty good." While Morrissey is planning on attending training camp with the Jets, it seems unlikely that he will make the team. The 18-year old is just 186 pounds, has WHL eligibility, and Noel said the team does not want to stunt the development of any of its young players. Included are Trouba and Scheifele. While Noel believes the last two first-round picks -- Trouba was the ninth overall pick in 2012, Scheifele was selected seventh overall in 2011 -- should be "on or near the team," he was not willing to say the defenceman and centre were entering camp needing to earn a NHL job. "We dont need them to overplay the situation," Noel said. Along with Morrissey, the Jets selected centre Nicolas Petan, goaltender Eric Comrie, centre James Lodge, right-wing J.C. Lipon, centre Andrew Copp, and defencemn Jan Kostalek, Tucker Poolman, Brenden Kichton and Marcus Karlstrom. Steph Curry Shoes Deals . Edwards, the Supercup Championship leader, was in the passenger seat as an instructor for a private training session at Queensland Raceway at Willowbank, outside Brisbane, Porsche Motorsport said.FRANKFURT, Germany -- Germany coach Joachim Loew made several surprise inclusions in his preliminary 30-man World Cup squad on Thursday, with established regulars such as Mario Gomez missing out. Loew named relatively unknown players such as Sampdoria defender Shkodran Mustafi, Borussia Dortmund defender Erik Durm, Augsburg attacking midfielder Andre Hahn, Hoffenheim striker Kevin Volland, and Schalke midfielders Max Meyer and Leon Goretzka, 18 and 19 respectively. None have made any appearances for the senior side. Freiburg midfielder Matthias Ginter, who made his debut against Chile in March, was also named. "We need young dynamic players like those who perhaps only recently played themselves into contention. They can inject fresh impetus into the side," said Loew, whose team was booed by its own fans during the lacklustre 1-0 win over Chile. The average age of the side is 24.8 years, and Loew, who was assistant to Jurgen Klinsmann before taking over after the 2006 World Cup, feels he has struck the right balance between youth and experience. "Many players are used to high-pressure situations from playing in the Champions League, they can live with it," Loew said. "Our foreign-based players also profit from establishing themselves abroad. That brings them further on a sporting level. Generally we have a good mix in the squad." Gomez, who has 25 goals in 59 games for Germany, missed out due to a left knee injury after a season blighted by injuries at Fiorentina. "He was injured for seven months, only played 280 minutes since September," Loew said. "So I formed the opinion that he isnt in a position physically to cope with the conditions in Brazil. There was also no place for Borussia Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen or former Germany No. 1 Rene Adler. "We didnt make any decisions against any players but for those who would maximize potential of the squad. Were very sorry for the players who didnt make it," Loew said. Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller and Hannovers Ron-Robert Zieler will deputize for current No. 1 Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich. Loew said he picked the players based on current form and fitness but made an exception in selecting midfielder Sami Khedira, who has yet to play for Real Madrid since having knee surgery last November. Bayern contributes seven players to the squad, more than any other side, with Dortmund boasting six. Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos and Mario Goetze lead the Bayern contingent, while Marco Reus, Mats Hummels and Marcel Schmelzer are among tthe best known Dortmund players.dddddddddddd Arsenal trio Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski were all included. "Behind each of these names is a clear yes," Loew said. "Well have to send some of them home and of course that will lead to disappointment but those players will have contributed to German football and they can be proud of that." Loew has until May 13 to submit a squad of no more than 30 players to FIFA, with the deadline for the final 23-man squad on June 2. Due to the German Cup final between Bayern and Dortmund in Berlin on May 17, Loew named a separate 18-man squad for Tuesdays friendly against Poland in Hamburg with eight first-time call-ups. These included Meyer, Goretzka and Volland, as well as Freiburgs Oliver Sorg and Christian Guenter, Antonio Ruediger of Stuttgart, Christoph Kramer of Moenchengladbach and Wolfsburg attacking midfielder Maximilian Arnold. Four other players were previously called up but have yet to earn their debuts: Mustafi, Hahn, Sebastian Jung of Eintracht Frankfurt and Sebastian Rudy from Hoffenheim. "Its clear to all of us that the team on the pitch in Hamburg wont be the team playing the World Cup in Brazil," Loew said. "We want to look beyond the World Cup. Some of the players can be influential figures in the big tournaments to come." In Brazil, Germany hopes to get off to a good start against Cristiano Ronaldos Portugal, before a reunion with Klinsmann, now in charge of the United States, and another game against Ghana, when half-brothers Kevin-Prince and Jerome Boateng will renew their World Cup rivalry on opposing sides. ------ Squad: Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Roman Weidenfeller (Borussia Dortmund), Ron-Robert Zieler (Hannover) Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Erik Durm (Borussia Dortmund), Kevin Grosskreutz (Borussia Dortmund), Benedikt Hoewedes (Schalke), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Marcell Jansen (Hamburger SV), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Per Mertesacker (Arsenal), Shkodran Mustafi (Sampdoria), Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund) Midfielders: Lars Bender (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Draxler (Schalke), Matthias Ginter (Freiburg), Leon Goretzka (Schalke), Mario Goetze (Bayern Munich), Andre Hahn (Augsburg), Sami Khedira (Real Madrid), Toni Kroos (Bayern Munich), Max Meyer (Schalke), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Andre Schuerrle (Chelsea), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich) Forwards: Miroslav Klose (Lazio), Kevin Volland (Hoffenheim), Lukas Podolski (Arsenal), Thomas Mueller (Bayern Munich) ' ' '

London, England - Fourth-seeded former runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska was sent packing, while former champion Petra Kvitova secured a berth in another Wimbledon quarterfinal on Monday. Russian left-hander Ekaterina Makarova, seeded 22nd, leveled the sluggish Polish star Radwanska in 6-3, 6-0 fashion in fourth-round action on the No. 3 Court. Radwanska reached the final here two years ago, but lost to Serena Williams. The sixth-seeded Czech lefty Kvitova blew past Chinese Peng Shuai 6-3, 6-2 to reach the round of eight here for a fifth year in a row. Kvitova was the Wimbledon champ in 2011 and reached the semifinals the year before that. Her quarterfinal opponent will be surprise fellow Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki exited the draw, losing 6-2, 7-5 to the unseeded Zahlavova Strycova on Day 7. Zahlavova Strycova finished with a lopsided 31-11 advantage in winners and advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal on her sixth match point. She had not taken a set in three previous meetings with her 16th-seeded Danish counterpart. The 43-ranked Zahlavova Strycova has now beaten seeded players in three consecutive matches. Wozniacki has never made it past the fourth round at the All England Club. Lucie Safarova beat Tereza Smitkova 6-0, 6-2 in an all-Czech fourth-round matchup. The 23rd-seeded Safarova will meet Makarova in the quarterfinals. Czech women went 3-1 on Monday, with the only loss coming in the all-Czech Safarova-Smitkova affair, and this marks the first time that three Czech women have reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. In some third-round action on Day 7, 19th-seeded German slugger Sabine Lisicki upset 11th-seeded former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Ivanovic captured her first-ever grass-court title a few weeks ago in Birmingham, but has never fared well on the lawns at Wimbledon, having failed to get past the fourth round here now the last seven years. Lisicki, meanwhile, thrives on the grass at the AEC, where she was last years surprise runner-up and reached at least the quarterfinals here in her previous four trips. Up next for the German will be Kazakhstans Yaroslava Shvedova, who moved on when American Madison Keys pulled out of their third-round match because of a left thigh injury. The two were scheduled to complete their match on Monday after Shvedova took the first set 7-6 (9-7) and things were tied at 6-6 in the second set before darkness forced the suspension of play on Saturday. Keys exit leaves the womens draw without any Americans, and for the first time since 1911, there are no Americans, male of female, playing in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Two quarterfinals will be staged on Tuesday, as Kvitova will tangle with Zahlavova Strycova and Makarova will battle Safarova. And the fourth round is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, as third-seeded French Open runner-up Simona Halep will face Kazakhstans Zarina Diyas, fifth- seeded French Open champ Maria Sharapova will battle ninth-seeded German Angelique Kerber and Lisicki will take on Shvedova. Sharapova captured her lone Wimbledon title in 2004 and was the 2011 runner-up here to Kvitova. Fake Nike Shoes Black Friday . Szabados joined the Southern Professional Hockey League team last week. The Browns want to believe him.The high-profile rookie quarterback apologized to his Browns teammates — and Cleveland fans — Monday for a season of distractions and vowed again to change.Manziel was fined over the weekend by the team after he missed a medical treatment for a hamstring injury. Manziel said he overslept, but denied he threw a party Friday night that also caused star wide receiver Josh Gordon to miss a team walk-through and draw a suspension for the season finale in Baltimore.Just last week, Manziel, who made two starts after replacing Brian Hoyer, promised a new approach.Johnny Football said he means it this time. Its about actions, he said. Its about being accountable and doing what Im going to say.The Browns have heard Manziel make similar promises in the past and are counting on him to keep his word.He realizes this, that at some point, talk is cheap, coach Mike Pettine said. To me, the actions are much more important than what he says. The 22-year-old Manziel shot down reports he hosted a party that was attended by teammates, including the troubled Gordon whom Pettine said is squarely in a crossroads with us because of his many missteps the past two seasons.Manziel said he let his guard down a little bit and went out Friday night with friends who were visiting from Kerrville, Texas. When he was late for his treatment Saturday, the Browns sent security personnel to his home.It was a mistake by me, he said. At the same time, you can sit here and say and talk and say this all you want, but when your actions dont reflect that, and you make a conscious decision to put yourself in the position that you stay out too late and not wake up the next morning, thats going to cause a lot of trouble, so I did that to myself. I brought this on myself.Manziel acknowledges hes responsible for much of the media commotion surrounding the team.I dont think its fair to anybody in this locker room the distractions Ive brought at points in time, he said. So Im sorry to these guys that are veterans in this locker room and know what it takes, that Im having to learn the hard way.He added, tellingly, that he better do that, or there will be consequences.Im either going to learn or Im going to be finding something else to do, he said.Pettine, who also suspended rookie cornerback Justin Gilbert for multiple violationss of team rules for Sundays game, said Manziel has no excuse for being late for treatment.ddddddddddddWe hold the quarterback to a higher standard than everybody else, he said. That just comes with the territory at that position. Has his behaviour been disappointing? Absolutely. The Browns drafted Manziel in the first round with the hope he would develop into their future quarterback. But the former college stars taste for clubs and weekends in Las Vegas raised immediate questions about his commitment, and when Manziel was on the field he looked overwhelmed and unprepared. While some Cleveland fans have called for the team to cut Manziel and Gordon, Pettine said the Browns wont do anything rash. With Manziels issues and Hoyers impending free agency, the Browns enter the off-season with as many questions about the quarterback situation as ever. The sample size on Manziel was not very big, and on the surface not very encouraging, he said. I would say our quarterback picture is muddy, at best.Hoyer had the Browns in playoff contention before falling apart. He said it would be a great scenario to continue to play in his hometown. But you always want to be wanted back and thats not up to me, he said, adding he has gotten no indication from the Browns that hes part of their plans.Pettine isnt optimistic Hoyer will return.Manziel hopes he can be the answer and feels he made progress. First, though, he has to take things more seriously. There have been some good things and bad things, he said. But Im still an extremely competitive person and know what I want to do in my life. I know what is important to me and now it is time to come in here, look myself in the mirror and hold myself accountable and start making some deals with myself.Manziel understands he hasnt been fair to Browns fans, but mostly hes cheated himself.Im upset with how I have handled things at times, he said. I did grow up and then I took a step back. It is the same story with me. Were taking one step forward and then two steps back. Now it is really in my court. And that means a good hard look in the mirror.Do I want to be known as a guy who has been in this league two years and now doing something different with his life, he said. Or come in here, give this thing a fair chance and ... be the quarterback and person I know I am.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org andwww.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

BALTIMORE -- Orioles slugger Chris Davis has tried just about everything to break out of lengthy hitting slump. Extra batting practice and intensive video study havent worked. Maybe a seat in the dugout will help the Baltimore star come up with the solution. Davis wasnt in the starting lineup Monday night against the Chicago White Sox. Manager Buck Showalter explained the move as simply an effort to get Delmon Young some playing time, but Davis knew better. He attributed the benching to his lack of hitting this month. "Thats pretty evident," Davis said. "Its about putting the best nine out there every game, giving yourself a chance to win, and lately I just havent been very good." Davis is batting .216 with 12 homers and 37 RBIs. Over his previous 14 games, he was 7 for 54 (.130). Last year, Davis hit .286 and led the majors with 53 home runs and 138 RBIs. "If youd have asked me in the off-season or during spring training if I thought I was going to struggle like Im doing this year, Id have told you that you were crazy," Davis said. Of the day off, he said, "Maybe it will give me a chance to clear my head." Davis misery this season began in earnest with an oblique injury that put him on the disabled list. That, however, is not an issue in his current struggle. "Im trying to figure it out. I know its frustrating for people to watch me go through it, but can you imagine how much more frustrating it is to actually go through it?" Davis said. "At the same time, we still have a lot of baseball left to play and I know Im going to get an opportunity to come out of it. I know Ill come out of it." Nothing hes tried to reverse the trend has worked, and Davis acknowledged that he hasnt a clue what to do next. "Im not really feeling a whole lot at the plate right now other than frustration," he said. A year ago, Davis was so sharp at the plate that almost every swing produced results. This year, not so much. "When youre hitting .330, it feels like you hit every hole, every pitch you take is a ball," he said. "When youre hitting just over .200, it feels like every pitch you take is a strike and every time you hit a ball hard somebody is standing there." Teammate Adam Jones suggested that a bloop hit, and not a tape-measure home run, could be the cure. "He might need to get jammed, bad jammed, and he hits it on the label right above his fingers and it falls for a base hit," Jones said. "He might figure it out from there." Showalter said Davis would start Tuesday, and the manager was optimistic that his first baseman will soon get back on track. "Hes close," Showalter said. "I have a lot of confidence it will pick up as the season goes." Wholesale Paul George Shoes . So how should Bettman and his owners spend the summer? Perhaps they should learn from the successes of this postseason, and tweak the game accordingly. The NHL playoffs were fast skating, hard hitting hockey highlighted by skill and spectacular goaltending. And there was but one fight, and not even the most ardent supporter of fighting in hockey could argue fisticuffs were missed. I understand the regular season is a long slog through winter, but do we want a sport where unnecessary violence breaks up the monotony? Especially when weve been witness to the majesty of the sport in its absence? Im not saying take fighting out of the game, but Colton Orr and George Parros are unnecessary elements of the sport.[Credit: ESPN] The hockey entity most in need of this summer break is the expansive community of punditry, from the media (both mainstream and not, though the line between the two becomes more and more blurred with each passing season) to the social media inclined fan. On Monday I witnessed an obsessive and rhetorically flawed argument on Twitter over the rumoured re-signing of Montreal Canadiens forward Dale Weise. Was he signed? Should he be signed? Was the term good for the cap? Who did and did not celebrate his acquisition from the Canucks for Raphael Diaz. French media versus English media versus fan versus blogger, all desperately lacking humility in their arguments. When the Habs officially announced a deal on a two-year contract extension with Weise Tuesday morning (for the exact term and dollar amount reported and endlessly disseminated Monday) the futile aand superfluous argument began anew.dddddddddddd I mean, over a fourth line winger? Paul DiPietro never received this kind of attention. Neither did Weises concussion, but thats a story the media will ignore another day.[Credit: NY Times] While social media and universal web access has taken the discourse to an inclusive realm, it has created an obsessive and pathologically invested fanbase and a media that stretches itself thin to fulfill the 24-hour new cycle. Take a breath folks. Go outside. Do something extraordinary. Expand your horizons. Go love up on a Bruins fan. Take a day at the beach. Spend a week without checking hockeydb.com or capgeek.com. Leave the sport alone for a few minutes. Itll still be there when you get back. The seasons not quite over yet. This week the NHLs 30 teams will consider buyouts to prepare their caps for next season. On June 22nd the 2014-15 schedule will be released so that we can all plan our November Saturdays accordingly. On the 24th, the NHL Awards ceremony takes place, where scarred players freshly relieved of their playoff beards wonder quietly who George Stroumboulopoulos is. The draft takes place on the weekend of the 27th in Philadelphia, which will ignite the hotstove and fuel dreams of parades and revelry. July 1st, Canada Day, a day we should all be out drinking Labatt 50 in the sun and launching bottle rockets recklessly into the night, finds much of the hockey world inside watching TV and waiting to see which albatross of a contract will be bought out in the summer of 2018. And then nothing until September, beautiful autumn, summer fading into the promise a new season, when all teams in first place, except the Oilers, who will be tied with the Flames for 30th. ' ' '

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- At any age, Jeff Gordon sure knows how to win. Nearly two decades after he burst onto the scene with his first victory, Gordon keeps taking checkered flags, storming to the lead in the final laps at Kansas Speedway on Saturday night for his first victory of the season and 89th overall in NASCARs top series. The 42-year-old Gordon held off a hard-charging Kevin Harvick on the final lap to move into the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field. Gordon won for the first time since October at Martinsville and became the ninth driver to win in the first 11 races this season. He entered the race with the points lead, but exclaimed a weight was lifted off his shoulders as he crossed the finish line for his third Kansas victory. "Im just so proud of (the 24 team). They have been giving me the best race cars all year long," Gordon said. "I have been having so much fun. Im going to be 43 this year and I feel like Im 25 again. That is the way they make me feel." Kasey Kahne was third, followed by Joey Logano and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Danica Patrick was seventh for her best career Cup finish. Gordon built his points lead on the strength of four top-fives and seven top-10s in the first 10 races -- including second-place finishes at Texas and Richmond -- but he knew how much one win would ease pressure on his Hendrick Motorsports team. He got it under the lights at Kansas. "This is so sweet," he said. "What a huge weight lifted off this teams shoulders. We needed to get to Victory Lane." Gordon is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his first career Cup victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the prestigious Coca-Cola 600. He will go for his fourth Coca-Cola 600 victory May 25. At Daytona this year, Gordon insisted he was serious about considering retirement with a fifth championship. He looks every bit a title contender -- but said he feels like he could race until 50 if his cars are this stout. "The whole retirement thing I think is thrown out too much," he said. "I know Im somewhat to blame for that." After the start of the race was delayed 35 minutes by rain, the first Sprint Cup night race at Kansas soon left drivers in the dark after the lights went out on the backstretch. NASCAR polled drivers if they wanted to continue and they were good to go, with Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards among the many who said the track was bright enough to race. Harvick led the final 36 laps in his October win and led the first 41 on Saturday before briefly falling into the middle of the pack. Harvick worked his way to the front in the No. 4 Chevrolet and opened a commanding lead over Gordon and Logano. He led a race-high 119 laps in the 400-mile race -- small consolation once Gordon grabbed the lead with eight to go. With two wins already, Harvick has been a force in his first season at Stewart-Haas Racing, but his dominant Chevrolet ran out of gas on his last pit stop and lost time that he couldnt recover. "I should have been paying attention to my pit road lights and should have got off pit road better," he said. "I made a mistake at the end and it cost us a chance to stay out in front of the 24." Patrick had her best run of the season, spending most of the race nestled inside the top 10, and brought a needed jolt of electricity when she passed teammate Tony Stewart and Earnhardt to move into third with 95 laps left. Patrick hadnt finished better this season than 14th at Fontana and her lone top-10 in the Cup series was an eighth-place finish in the 2013 Daytona 500. She was shuffled back on a restart, costing her a top five. Patrick beamed in the garage after the kind of finish shed been striving for since her dazzling performance at Daytona more than a year ago. Crew chief Tony Gibson told her, "Chicks rule, huh?" "I know that we havent had the best of times, but we work hard for it," Patrick said. "This is the kind of stuff that materializes in wins. Weve just got to keep hanging around and doing what were doing. Im just proud of everyone for working really hard and believing in me." Sara Christians fifth-place finish in a 1949 race remains the best for a female driver in NASCARs top series. Jamie McMurray and David Gilliland both had their cars erupt in flames in separate accidents. Gilliland was slow to exit his No. 38 Ford and gingerly walked away from the smouldering wreckage. He was checked out and released from the infield care centre. "It was the hardest hit Ive had in a long time," he said. McMurray had a solid run derailed when he smacked the wall and the back of his No. 1 Chevrolet caught fire. "I heard a small pop, and then just lost all the steering and got into the fence," he said. There was a moment during Fridays training session in Obetz, Ohio, where Whitecaps players were doing their “2 in the middle” drill, a fun warm-up exercise they would have performed hundreds of times. As me and some other stragglers were chatting informally with Caps Coach Carl Robinson, an explosive roar came from the group, some of whom were now on the ground laughing. I said to the coach, “Thats a good sound." "Brilliant” he replied. Something special is happening within a group that has representation from all over the world and that varies in age from 20 to 34. Theres a togetherness, despite a language barrier that could easily divide the locker room between the Latin-based players, the younger Americans and the senior pros. Midfield maestro and Designated Player Pedro Morales was in the hotel lobby with a few teammates having a coffee when he remarked on how this might be the best team spirit hes experienced in his career. This is a 10-year pro who was playing in La Liga only a few months ago with Malaga. Prior to Wednesdays Amway Canadian Championships, a game which featured a very young, Canadian heavy squad, all the senior players remained in the locker room right up until kick-off to offer support and encouragement for the youngsters who are likely to replace them one day. Nigel Reo Coker, a veteran of the Barclays Premier League, who played in the Toronto game, teased the armband-wearing Russell Teibert as the Niagara Falls, Ontario native gave his first captains speech in the huddle. “Speak up, Russ. I cant hear you.” More laughter. More calming of nerves before a team of kids was about to battle a line-up that featured Jermain Defoe, Michael Bradley and Gilberto. The Whitecaps more senior group then followed up the Toronto performance with a solid, cohesive and monstrous away win at Columbus, where 23-year-old Eric Hurtado, in only his fifth MLS start, scored his first MLS goal. It was a moment of individual brilliance, as the sophomore took an ousted clearance off his chest and rolled his defender before turning and unleashing a left-footed blast into the top corner. His celebration was oddly muted, as if hed scored that type of goal a hundred times. But the occasion wasnt lost on his teammates who gathered quickly to mob him. When asked about the goal after, Hurtado immediately acknowledged his colleagues role in the goal and the win. It might be overly simplistic to compare team-building with cooking a dish - you follow a recipe that you think will work and then add certain missing ingredients until it tastes just right. Only, there is no recipe for team-building. While the 2014 edition of the Whitecaps is nowhere near ready to put on top of the table, what is simmering on the stove has a wonderful aroma. Its also creating a healthy appetite for hungry Whitecaps fans. Vapormax Flyknit Noir 2020 . - Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Jason Babin is now a free agent. Vapormax Homme 2020 . Wichita State led throughout the first half, but Detroit was able to keep the game close and made it a three-point game several times. Detroits lead had reached 10 a few minutes later, but Wichita State was able to slowly chip away at the lead and a 3-pointer from Tekele Cotton gave the Shockers the lead for good at 63-60 with just over five minutes to play. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Trout keeps padding his stats with 1 1/2 weeks to go until the All-Star break. He homered leading off the ninth inning after the Los Angeles Angels twice rallied to tie the game, giving them a 7-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night. Trout sent an 0-2 pitch from Tony Sipp over the wall in left centre field and charged into a celebratory mob at home plate. Teammate Erick Aybar doused Trout with a blue sports drink, staining his white uniform, and fans chanted "MVP! MVP!" "The adrenaline rush you get when it goes out, its something special. Its always good to come up big," Trout said. "What a comeback. We were up three, they came back and scored five, and we just kept fighting." It was Trouts second career walkoff hit, both of them homers. The American League player of the month for June hit his team-leading 20th homer, and has eight homers in his last 18 games. Trout became the eighth Angels player with 20 or more homers and at least 60 RBIs before the All-Star break, and the first since Vladimir Guerrero in 2004. "Its one of those things where you see the pitch and see the swing, and you say to yourself, Theres not many players in our game that can do what he did with that pitch," Astros manager Bo Porter said. Trout figures to start in centre field in the All-Star game on July 15 in Minneapolis. Joe Smith (3-0) got the victory for the Angels, who have won eight in a row at home for the first time since Sept. 16-24, 2005, and have the majors best record at home. Los Angeles has won 11 of 14 overall. Sipp (1-1) took the loss for the Astros, who dropped their fifth in a row. "I went at him with my best stuff," Sipp said about Trout. "But even when you make a good pitch sometimes, a guy of that calibre will put a good swing on it." Houstons Jose Altuve, who came in leading the AL in hits, stolen bases and batting average, went 0 for 5 with a strikeout. The Angels blew a 3-1 lead in the third and then trailed 6-5 on Albert Pujols 510th career homer -- a two-run shot -- in the fourth. They tied it 6-all in the seventh on Howie Kendricks RBI double off the right field wall that scored Pujols, who singled leading off. Pujols was 3 for 4, and Kendrick went 4 for 4. "You never know whos going to step up," Trout said. "Howie came up with a big double, I put a good swing on it in the ninth and it went out. Im going to swing if its close." The Astros led 1-0 in the second on Chris Carters homer. They took a 6-3 lead in the fourth on George Springers two-run homer and a three-run shot by Jon Singleton. Angels starter C.J. Wilson continued to struggle. The left-hander has failed to pitch more than five innings in four of his last seven starts. He gave up six runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings, struck out six and walked one. Wilson was watching game video in another room afterward. Houston starter Dallas Keuchel allowed five runs and 13 hits in five innings, struck out one and walked one. The left-hander was scratched last Saturday against Detroit because of left wrist inflammation. He was making his first appearance since June 22, when he allowed five runs -- four earned -- in a 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay. "That was very disappointing on my part," Keuchel said. "The offence did more than enough to come out with a win, and I just didnt do my part. I havent been too good as of late, so I guess I have to go back to the drawing board and figure some stuff out." NOTES: Trout became the 13th major league player aged 22 or younger with 20 or more homers before the All-Star break. ... Houston activated RHP Josh Fields from the 15-day DL after he went on it because of soreness in his right forearm. ... Atlanta improved to 2-0 on the residency with Saturdays 93-91 triumph over Minnesota, as Ivan Johnson scored his teams final four points, including the game-winning free throw with 4.Thursday night, the Blue Jays not only dropped out of first place in the American League East, they also fell below the threshold of qualifying for either of the two Wild Card spots in the American League. Their 4-1 loss at Oakland to kick off the 10-game road trip coupled with Baltimores 5-2 win at home over Texas put the Jays in secondnd place place in the East, one percentage point back of the Orioles. It also dropped them behind the second and third place teams in the West, the Angels and the Mariners, who now hold those Wild Card slots. With 75 games still to play, its really too early to stress over that, but it did get me thinking about the West. Major League Baseball didnt come to the left coast until 1958 when the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers moved there in tandem to cash in on a new and expanding market. The American League didnt get a west coast club until the league expanded in 1961 adding the Los Angeles Angels and the new Washington Senators, essentially replacing the team that moved to Minnesota. There have been 53 seasons where it was possible for two west coast teams to have met in the World Series, from 1961 through 2013. Over that span there have only been four true western World Series. In 1974, the Oakland As won their third Fall Classic in a row, beating the Dodgers 4 games to 1. In 1988, 14 years later, Orel Hershizer, Kirk Gibson and the rest of the Dodgers upset Oakland 4 games to 1. The following year, 1989 in the infamous "Earthquake" series, the As swept the Giants in four-straight. Finally in 2002, the Angels beat Barry Bonds and the Giants in seven games for their one and only World Series title in their 42nd year of existence. Two teams that have never met in the World Series are the Dodgers and the Angels. Could it possibly happen this year? Well, its not so far-fetched. The Dodgers have won seven of their last 10 and have climbed over the Giants into first in the NL West by a half-game. They also have the second-best record in the National League to Milwaukee. The Dodgers hitting stats are pretty impressive. Theyve scored 367 runs, fourth in the Senior Circuit, but second to Milwaukee in terms of teams holding playoff positions, They are third in team batting average in the National at .257 and third in OPS at .729. But its in the pitching department where they really impress. They are second in pitching ERA to Washington at 3.23. Theyve made 57 quality starts and four of their five starters have won at least eight games. The other, Josh Beckett has five wins and a no-hitter to his credit. The leader of the staff, and the best pitcher in the Majors right now, Clayton Kershaw, has nine victories and a no-hitter, in a near perfect game of his own. They have some flaws and a worrisome shoulder issue with shortstop Hanley Ramirez, but right now, the Dodgers look like the best all-around team in the National League with apologies to the Brewers. Over in the American League, the Angels have won eight of their last 11 and have closed to within three-and-a-half games back of Oakland in the West. They have latched on to that first Wild Card slott.dddddddddddd The Halos are second in hitting in the American League behind the As. They have scored 408 runs, four more than the Blue Jays with three games in hand. Theyre also tied with Oakland in home runs with 91. They also have a .749 OPS behind only the Tigers and Blue Jays. The Angels pitching staff isnt as deep as the Dodgers, but their top three starters Jared Weaver, C.J Wilson and Garrett Richards have combined for 26 wins. They are fourth in team ERA in the AL at 3.86 and have made 47 quality starts. Their bullpen has been up and down, but skipper Mike Scioscia is hoping Joe Smith and Jason Grilli, who was just picked up from Pittsburgh, can do the job at closing time. The big plus-factor with both the Angels and Dodgers is hungry ownership. Arte Moreno bought the Angels from Disney in 2003, the year after they won that World Series over the Giants, They havent been back to the Fall Classic under his stewardship. The Dodgers ownership group, which includes Magic Johnson, bought the club in 2012 for a record $2 billion. They are determined to win a championship, something the Dodgers havent done since 1988. The Angels, who have played out of Orange County for the bulk of their existence have nearly always played second fiddle to the Dodgers in the L.A. market. The Dodgers hold the single game attendance record of 115,300, when they played their season opener at the old Memorial Coliseum as part of a charity fund-raising event. But the Angels are no slouches in the attendance department either. Last year marked their 11th-straight season of drawing at least 3 million fans. They have also had 30 seasons of drawing 2 million, which is second in Major League history to only the mighty Yankees. We havent had a so-called "Cross-town" World Series since 2000, when the Yankees beat the Mets in the battle of New York. The White Sox and Cubs havent done it since 1906, when the " no-hit wonder " White Sox defeated the Cubs. These kinds of match-ups are few and far between. They used to be commonplace in the early 20s and late 40s and throughout the 50s, when the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants all held sway in New York. Im not saying the Angels and Dodgers are definately going to meet in the World Series, but there is a decent shot, and it would provide some great storylines and some compelling viewing and listening. - The Yankees are a hard team to get a handle on. Theyre sitting at .500 at 42-42 in the A.L. East and theyve lost five more than theyve won at home.Yet for all of that, in Derek Jeters final season, they are still only three-and-a-half games back of the Orioles and Jays in the division. Still, what appears to be the weakest Yankees team in four decades will have to decide soon whether to become a buyer or seller at the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline. The new that C.C Sabathia has been shut down indefinately with a flair up of his swollen knee again, has got to have them thinking about next year and beyond. Still, they are the Yankees and this is Jeters final season. Stay tuned. ' ' '

In December, Kevin Glenn was ecstatic about joining the Ottawa Redblacks. Now the veteran quarterback wants the CFL expansion squad to trade him elsewhere. On Dec. 15, a jubilant Glenn was seen in a family video celebrating after being named a first-round pick by Ottawa in the CFL expansion draft. Following two productive seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, the 13-year veteran was looking forward to leading a first-year franchise and being able to call the Redblacks his team. However, that sentiment changed Feb. 4 when Ottawa signed veteran Henry Burris to a lucrative multi-year contract and immediately named him its starter. On Feb. 11, TSN Reporter Farhan Lalji reported that the Redblacks were listening to offers after Glenn made a request to be moved. "Ive asked to be traded and it dates back to when the actual situation happened," Glenn told The Canadian Press on Thursday in his first public comments regarding his situation with Ottawa. "I really dont want to be part of the situation that is in Ottawa . . . Ive spoken to (head coach) Rick Campbell and (GM) Marcel Desjardins so they know." Burris, 38, was the CFLs passing leader the last two years with Hamilton before being released after free-agent quarterback Zach Collaros joined the Tiger-Cats. "I said I didnt want to do any media because I didnt want to do the back-and-forth stuff, I just left it up to them . . . it seems to me its been kind of dragging out to where it sometimes feels to me they dont care. The last I heard was it was at a standstill." Glenn said he initially asked to be released, but the Redblacks declined. "Its the waiting game and thats another thing that kind of takes a toll on a player because you dont know," Glenn said. "You wake up every morning wondering if this is the day youre going to get traded, is this the day theyll call and say theyre not trading you or youre not on the trading block anymore and they couldnt get anything done? "The whole process is tough but you just try to block it out. Im continuing to do the workouts and throwing the football as well as the other endeavours I do in the off-season." Ottawa GM Marcel Desjardins said hes working to accommodate Glenn. "I need to do whats in the best interest of our football team," he said. "Weve reached out to a few teams but at this point its certainly premature to say anything would actually happen." Desjardins said if he cant work out a trade, it will be up to Glenn to decide whether to report to the Redblacks. There have been suggestions that Glenn would not report to camp if he wasnt traded. "Put it this way, we are not going to release him," Desjardins said. "We have to be smart and put ourselves in the best position depth-wise at the quarterback position and thats what weve done." Dan Vertlieb, Glenns Vancouver-based agent, said hes hoping a suitable resolution can be reached. "Kevin and I have spoken with Ottawas front office on multiple occasions and made our feelings known," said Vertlieb. "At this point, the ball is in their court. "Were hopeful theyll find a way to resolve the situation in a timely manner." The five-foot-11, 205-pound Glenn was 20-8 as a starter replacing the injured Drew Tate over two seasons with Calgary. He guided the Stampeders to a Grey Cup berth in 2012 and top spot in the West Division in 13 with a league-best 14-4 record. "I think everyone could see in that video from my family how I felt (about going to Ottawa)," Glenn said. "But circumstances and things happened to where theres been a change of heart." Ottawa is the fifth stop of Glenns CFL career. Despite having never won a Grey Cup, the former Illinois State star has enjoyed a distinguished tenure in Canada, being named a finalist for the leagues outstanding player award in 07 and currently standing 10th in all-time passing yards with over 39,000. "My biggest thing is an opportunity and as a player I think I do have the right to say if this is a situation I really want to be part of," Glenn said. "Now, ultimately, we all know its not the players decision. "We get into this profession knowing in certain situations we sign a contract and dont have control after its signed. But in my opinion everybody should work towards a common goal to rectify a situation." A consummate professional, the well-spoken Detroit native has also endured adversity. Hes been traded on three occasions -- including twice on the same day and in another deal involving Burris -- led a team to the Grey Cup but couldnt play in the big game due to a broken arm, been replaced as a starter, released and most recently left unprotected for the expansion draft. "One of the reasons why Im here today is because Ive gone through and been able to overcome situations like this and come out on top," Glenn said. Still, Glenn cant help but ask what else he needs to do to show hes worthy of being a CFL starter. "I do and sometimes I dont know the answer," he said. "You just have to continue to keep going. "People can say, Win a Grey Cup and this wont happen to you, but I beg to differ because I think it could still happen to you even if you did." Unfortunately for Glenn, there arent many CFL teams in the market for a starter. Tate is expected to be the No. 1 quarterback in Calgary but if hes injured again youngster Bo Levi Mitchell has shown significant promise. Winnipeg could potentially be an option despite having signed free-agent Drew Willy and acquiring Brian Brohm from Hamilton. Willy and Brohm both lack CFL experience, as does returnee Max Hall. Glenn is very familiar with the Manitoba capital, having spent five seasons there (2004-08). In 2007, he was a finalist for the CFLs outstanding player award and led the Bombers to a Grey Cup appearance but didnt play in the 23-19 loss to Saskatchewan after suffering a broken arm in the East Division final. Glenn admits he couldve stayed quiet and collected a paycheque in Ottawa. However, he believes his play in Calgary proves hes capable of playing well and at the very least deserves the chance to compete for a starting job. "I could sit back and collect a paycheque . . . but I feel its only right for me to feel this way after the two seasons Ive had," Glenn said. "It would be different if I was coming off a year where I struggled and didnt do what I did the past two years. "As a player, as a professional athlete, I have to have the mentality of Look, Ive done enough to be a starter. Ive taken teams to Grey Cups, Ive been nominated for the leagues outstanding player award, Im in the top-10 all-time. I have the confidence to say, Hey, I want to continue to keep playing. I dont want to necessarily sit on the bench." Glenn said while his situation is indeed frustrating, its not just that way for him only. "It also affects my family," he said. "My wife, kids, mother and father, sister-in-law, niece and brother all experienced the same joy (of Glenn being drafted by Ottawa) and thats what I think some people dont understand. "Your family experiences the same feelings you do when it comes to this game because theyre there, theyre with you when all this stuff happens so they get to see you being frustrated or happy. They know it because theyve lived it but sometimes its hard for even them to come to terms with it because its happening to a loved one." Glenn isnt bitter about his situation, adding its part of the game. But he feels its important people understand the personal element of a pro athletes life. "I understand there are plenty of people whod die to just have the contract with a pro team, I totally get that," he said. "I wake up every morning and have for the last 14 years feeling Im blessed to have been able to do something I love for this long. "But at the same time, were human beings, we still have feelings, we still have responsibilities we have to fulfil outside of sports and thats taking care of our family and doing it the best way we can. When these type of things happen where an organization now has control over whether or not youre playing or even have the opportunity whether or not to play I just want fans to understand that side of it and whats really going on." MANCHESTER, England -- Bad weather played havoc with the Premier League on Wednesday as two matches were called off because of stormy conditions in northwest England. Manchester Citys home match against Sunderland was the first to be postponed before Everton announced that its game against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park had been called off due to "building damage which has led to safety concerns." The Met Office issued red warnings -- the highest possible -- for parts of Wales and the northwest, with gusts of 100 miles (160 kilometres) per hour expected on Wednesday evening. An amber warning, meaning possible severe gales, was also in place for the Manchester area. City tweeted that the game was "postponed due to exceptional and escalating weather" and because the safety of fans "cannot be guaranteed." City could have gone top of the standings with a victory -- provided that Arsenal failed to beat Manchester United in their match in north London. Evertons game was called off 35 minutes before kick-off because of the stormy weather. Several roads around Goodison Park had been closed due to the high winds. No new dates have been set for the games. Nike Epic React Flyknit 2 Kopen . -- Craig Anderson has quite a record against his former team, the Florida Panthers.NEW ORLEANS -- By necessity, the Pelicans keep heaping more responsibility in Tyreke Evans lap -- and he keeps coming through. Evans had 22 points and a career-high 15 assists, and the short-handed Pelicans overcame the loss of Anthony Davis to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games, 102-95 victory over Utah on Friday night. The performance came with Evans starting at point guard, a role Evans occupied in stints with Sacramento earlier in his career, but not with New Orleans until this week, beginning with an upset victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. "I always seem to make it work. Im a basketball player," Evans said. "So, just trying to make the best of it, you know, for me and my teammates and the coaching staff and the organization. Just trying to finish the season out strong and win as many games as possible." Davis left with a left ankle injury less than four minutes in, further depleting New Orleans already injury-riddled roster. But the 6-foot-6 Evans simply looked for other teammates when the Jazzs defence collapsed on him, and the offence flowed. "Hes so big, he can see over the other guards and that gives him the ability to find guys," Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. "Hes always a threat to score at the basket, so that helps." Anthony Morrow scored 20 points, Al-Farouq Aminu added 13, and Austin Rivers and Darius Miller each had 12. Alexis Ajinca, playing 28 minutes in Davis absence, had 10 rebounds, nine points and three blocks. Derrick Favours had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Jazz, who lost their third straight. Gordon Hayward added 21 points. "We just have to continue to fight and close those games out," said Trey Burke, who had 12 points. "We definitely had a chance to win this game tonight. "We arent going to get discouraged," Burke continued. "Were all good players and we know we are capable. No matter what, were sticking together." Before the game, the Jazz ruled out reserve guard Alec Burks with a left ankle sprain. The Peelicans, meanwhile, scratched guards Eric Gordon (left knee tendinitis) and Brian Roberts (left knee bone bruise).dddddddddddd Davis started grimacing during the opening minutes. With 8:17 left in the first quarter, Ajinca was subbed into the game and Davis headed for the locker room. Williams did not update Davis condition after the game. Still, the Pelicans managed to maintain the lead for most of the way. Evans pushed the ball in transition and routinely slashed to the hoop to convert short floaters or layups in traffic. Otherwise, he found players such as Morrow and Miller on the perimeter. "Hes been doing a great job in that role change, but thats what great players do," Morrow said of Evans. "Im proud of him, glad hes stepped it up. Obviously he does a lot of things for us on both ends of the floor, and obviously hes adjusted his game and hes been great for us." Evans layup put the Pelicans up 72-66 heading into the fourth quarter, and his weaving dribble drive for a reverse scoop made it 87-81 with 1:52 left. Morrow hit three of his four 3-point attempts, the last giving the Pelicans an 85-79 lead with 3:05 left. Ajincas three-point play on an 8-foot jumper as he was fouled by Favours made it 90-83 with less than a minute left, but the teams traded a slew of free throws before it was over. Marvin Williams finished with 12 points for Utah, but the Jazz committed 19 turnovers, leading to 33 Pelicans points. Evans normally plays shooting guard or small forward, but once again looked comfortable at the point while scoring 13 first-half points. The Pelicans 39-31 when Morrows consecutive jumpers capped an 8-0 run, and New Orleans lead was 43-38 at halftime. NOTES: The Pelicans and Jazz split their previous two meetings. They meet once more on April 4 in Utah. ... The Jazz are 8-29 on the road. ... Utah next plays on Sunday in Oklahoma City. ... Evans has hit 20 points 15 times this season and has nine double-doubles. ... The Pelicans shot 50.7 per cent (36 of 71), marking the third time during their current winning streak they eclipsed the 50 per cent mark. ' ' '

TORONTO - Once he got going, no one could calm Jonas Valanciunas down, despite Kyle Lowrys best efforts. As Valanciunas was whistled for a rare technical toward the end of the third quarter - a result of waving his hand at an official after being called for a foul - Lowry pulled the Raptors sophomore aside, corralling him by his jersey and patting him on the back. "Youve got to be smart in certain situations," Lowry told the young centre. "I just tried to say look, you cant waste your money." "Yeah, he was trying to calm me down," Valanciunas said of the conversation with his point guard, speaking with a mischievous look on his face following the Raptors 98-91 win over the Cavaliers. "That technical foul cost me, so I feel bad now." He shouldnt. The tech will cost Valanciunas a small fraction of his next paycheque but the unbridled emotion he played with in the second half of Fridays game was the driving force of Torontos rapid turnaround. Valanciunas, like the rest of his team, got off to an ugly start. The Raptors were fortunate to be down by only five going into the break, scoring just 39 points in the first half and shooting 33 per cent from the field. For the third straight game coming out of the All-Star break, Valanciunas got a quick hook in the first quarter. The seven-footer has been strangely quiet of late, averaging under six points in four games entering Fridays contest. His minutes have been down, as hes battled growing pains on the defensive end. After being sent to the bench midway through the opening quarter, he sat for around 12 minutes of game time before re-entering. Somewhere, somehow, someone lit a fire under the sophomore and not only did it spark him, it ignited the whole team. Valanciunas was a possessed man coming out of the halftime break. He was aggressive on defence, manic on the boards and dominant down low. He ran the floor with a purpose, worked to establish position, then demanded the ball. As he turned to face up Clevelands Tyler Zeller midway through the third, he pump faked - not once, but twice - took the contact and drained the jumper. Before completing the three-point play, he pumped his fist in the air and yelled out to the crowd, or the Cavs, or his teammates, or whoever was listening. His face was as red as the logo at centre court. He meant business. "Hes going to have ups and downs but tonight he was intense," Lowry said of Valanciunas, who had 10 points and four rebounds in the third quarter, finishing the game with 18 points and eight boards. "He really kind of carried us with his intensity and his passion and fire tonight." The 21-year-olds inspired play lifted the Raptors in what turned out to be a game-deciding third quarter. Toronto scored 37 points in the frame - two fewer than its first-half total - and shot 70 per cent, turning a five-point deficit at intermission into an 11-point advantage going into the fourth. "Hes our enforcer in the paint," said Amir Johnson, who returned to the starting lineup Friday after coming off the bench in his two previous outings, nursing an ankle injury. "When he gets going, everybody else plays good and that just gets everybody open shots when hes scoring in the paint." Johnson also came to life in the second half, the two bigs even hooked up on an alley-oop lob - from Johnson to Valanciunas - late in game. "We had to give our bigs a wakeup call," Dwane Casey said. "They turned it around in the second half. We reminded them, theres more to the game than the offensive end." "You can do a lot of different things other than make shots," he continued, "and I thought the second half, Amir Johnson and JV worked at it and got it done." Although Valanciunas helped turn the game, the best Raptor on the night - from start to finish - was fellow sophomore Terrence Ross, hands down. Ross scored a team-high 20 points, shooting 9-for-18, but his most important contribution was on the defensive end, where he went toe-to-toe with All-Star Game MVP Kyrie Irving. When the game began, Ross was assigned to check former Raptor Jarrett Jack while Lowry defended Irving. Early in the first quarter, there was a switch and Ross ended up on the Cavs point guard and leading scorer. It stuck for the rest of the evening, and Ross did not disappoint. The Raptors forward used his length and athleticism to frustrate Irving, forcing him to launch tough perimeter jumpers, keeping him out of the paint and holding him to 3-of-16 shooting. "He can score in a lot of different ways [and] get his teammates involved," Ross said of Irving, who ended up with 17 points and nine assists for Cleveland. "So if you slow him down, you slow the team down." "He had to chase [Irving] everywhere," Johnson said of Ross. "He chased him off screens, he didnt quit on plays and thats how you have to play a guy like that. [Irvings] so crafty and hes always moving so you just have to keep a body on him and stay in front of him. [Ross] did a great job." It was Canada Basketball Night at the Air Canada Centre Friday, as local product and first overall pick Anthony Bennett made his NBA debut in Toronto. Bennett, who continues to improve after a slow start to the season, knocked down his first two shots and finished with nine points in 15 minute of action while fellow Canadian Tristan Thompson scored 13 to go along with nine boards. In snapping Clevelands six-game winning streak, the Raptors picked up their 30th win of the campaign, doing so in just 55 games. It took them 78 contests to reach the 30-win mark a year ago. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Tony Stewart will not race Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, skipping a second straight NASCAR Sprint Cup race since striking and killing a driver in a dirt-track race at a small New York track. Stewart announced the decision in a statement Thursday. His plans for the rest of the season have not been determined. Jeff Burton will drive Stewarts No. 14 Chevrolet in Michigan. Stewart also sat out Sunday at Watkins Glen, a day after he struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car event in Canandaigua, New York. After Stewart clipped Wards car, sending it spinning, Ward got out of the car during the caution period, walked down the track and was hit by Stewart. Wards funeral was Thursday in Boonville, New York. He died of blunt force trauma. Stewarts dirt-racing career is on hold, and he could face criminal charges. Stewart has not commented since he made a statement Sunday. "There arent words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.," Stewart said in the statement. The three-time NASCAR champion is winless and 21st in the Cup standings this season. He would have needed a victory in one of the final four races to have a chance to become eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Its not clear what sitting out does for Stewarts Chase chances. NASCAR rules says a driver must either qualify the car or race the car each weekend. NASCAR does have the power to grant a waiver. Stewart has 48 career Cup wins in 542 starts. Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators dont have any evidence at this point to support criminal intent. The investigation could last another two weeks. His sponsors have stayed with him as the investigation unfolds. Mobil 1 has served as the primary sponsor of the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 14 Chevrolet for 19 of the 22 Sprint Cup Series races this season. "The investigation continues, and we are monitoring the situation," ExxonMobil spokesman Christian Flathman said Thursday. Regan Smith started for Stewart at Watkins Glen and finished 37th. Burton made only two starts this season, the last coming in July at New Hampshire. The 21-time Sprint Cup winner parted ways with Richard Childress Racing at the end of the season, and Ryan Newman replaced him at RCR. Burton works as an analyst for NBC. Fake Yeezy . You put a young player with potential in a winning environment where there is veteran leadership, outstanding coaching and management and a way that things are done and its a wonderful environment for growth, improvement in a climate of constant accountability and expectation of achievement/production. When he was drafted out of Cleveland State this was a young man who could go either way as a pro but the professionalism of the team that drafted him has been a wonderful place for him to be nurtured and educated on how to be a good pro. Hes really impressed me with his play off the bench and has made a significant difference against Indiana in key moments. Proper environment truly does effect outcomes. 2. INDY DEFENCE: Im sorry but the Pacers have NO chance of winning this series if they continue to allow the Heat to shoot 50 per cent plus as theyve done in all of the first three games. The Pacers have been an outstanding defensive team the past few years and thats their "calling card" - it sure aint their offence! To think that youre going to run up and down with the Heat and match buckets - good luck with that. The small/skilled lineups that the Heat throw out there are making Roy Hibbert and David West ineffective to say the least. Its easy to say but hard to do, but the Pacers have to start mucking it up and make this a much more physical and hotly contested defensive style of play. Miami is a flow team and if you allow them to get in rhythm and swing the ball with minimal resistance you might as well set up tee times for next week. The D had better be drastically better on Monday night or this series will wind down quickly. 3. SERGE IBAKA and REGGIE JACKSON (Thunder): A combined 30 points from two starters vs. minimal production from Nick Collison and Thabo Sefolosha - what a difference! Add another playmaker in Jackson (five assists) to the mix and suddenly the ball moves with a purpose and they look like a "team" instead of an "iso show" and then Ibaka was brilliant coming back from the injury with seven boards and four blocks - talk about impact performance. Suddenly the rim/paint was being protected and the Thunder played with some force and swagger defensively and on the boards. Good players used properly and healthy enough to play changes how things go drastically. Winning is really hard and you need your top guys there or you are overwhelmed at times. Now that looked like the OKC Thunder on Sunday night. If theyy can continue to play that way weve got a series that will go seven games.dddddddddddd 4. NBA DRAFT: You watch the Playoffs so far and the thing that continues to jump out at me is how the NBA has changed over the years. How that reflects on this years Draft is that if youre the Cavs and the Bucks with the first two picks youve really got to think long and hard about how Joel Embiids game fits in the league today versus the upside over a 10-12 year period of guys like Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker. This has become a perimeter-based league with skilled guys who can do it all versus the traditional brand of power basketball which still has its place in the game...yet at what price? Always a terrific philosophical discussion for GMs, executives and coaches to hash out. 5. POTENTIAL VS. PRODUCTION (Terrence Ross and Jonas Valanciunas, Raptors): You can talk about the No. 20, 37 and 59 picks in this years Draft that the Raptors have and the free agent decisions and possible moves that GM Masai Ujiri can make this off-season. But for the Raptors to continue to improve and take nice gradual building steps over the next few years the significant improvement in every respect from these two youngsters is paramount. Players are made in the off-season and teams are developed in-season. Will these two young men pay the price between now and early October and come back stronger, more skilled, more knowledgeable and ready to be consistent winning pieces that take an organization from respectable to another gear? Only time will tell. "To whom much is given (major minutes and starting opportunities as sophomores), much is expected." Cant wait to see what both young men come back like in the Fall. Their improvement/development will define the next step for the Raptors. Lots of attention will be focused on the role of head coach Dwane Casey and his staff along with the support staff in the further growth of both guys but in my opinion its a whole lot more now on these two guys personally of how bad do they want to be next level players? When you reach your third year as a pro its time for you to be able to "figure it out" on your own and the coaches are there to guide you on the proper path - yet its on YOU. Its time to be consistent producers in every respect. How these young men (I really like both of them) take personal ownership of their professional careers will set the stage for the long-term direction of the Raptors and the moves Ujiri needs to make accordingly to fill in the blanks. The proper environment exists for both to improve significantly - now its on them to seize the opportunity given to them. ' ' '

Wholesale Fake Jerseys .com) - Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mat Latos had an arthroscopic procedure performed on his right elbow last week, the teams official site reported Wednesday. One of the most impressive data visualization developments in recent years has been the work by Grantlands Kirk Goldsberry, who designed hexagonal bin plots to display shooting tendencies and effectiveness for the National Basketball Association. The idea of capturing shooting tendencies and effectiveness in the National Hockey League has been toyed around with for what feels like a decade, but there are more obvious obstacles. The biggest challenge is tied up in the efficiency aspect, because shooting percentage in the National Hockey League is primarily luck driven. As a result of this, most of the hockey analytics community have shifted their attention to shot-differentials as opposed to raw shot quality. The former is a repeatable skill that leads to favourable goal differentials and victories; the latter is swamped by noise and is more likely to cloud analysis than favourably supplement it. However, theres one aspect of shot quality that remains fascinating to me, and thats the distance from which a player or team shoots from. We know shot distance has an effect on shooting percentages – the closer the shooter is to the cage, the more likely that shot is going to end up as a goal. And, at the very least, we know a skater getting into his preferred shooting area is a fairly reproducible skill. Over at War on Ice, Andrew Thomas has borrowed Goldsberrys idea in an effort to visualize locations and success rates for players and teams using those same hexagonal bin plots. At the team-level through the first third of the season, we can use it for descriptive purposes, perhaps illuminating some of the raw data we already have at our disposal. I think the most obvious team to first pull data from would be the Dallas Stars. Dallas was a pre-season darling with many, but the team is off to an awful 10-13-5 start. Almost all of the teams struggles deals with a glaring inability to keep pucks out of the back of their net – the Dallas goaltenders have posted just a .904 5-on-5 save percentage, good for 28th in the league. Are the goaltenders just plain brutal, or is it possible theyre being kneecapped by the teams inability to keep shooters out of the danger areas? Lets look at a hexagonal bin plot, specifically shot rates against relative to the league average. Blue bubbles indicate an area where the team concedes less shots than the league average. Red bubbles indicate an area where the team concedes more shots than the league average. Ideally, you want all blue. At the very least, you want blue in front of the teams net, where shot distance is extremely small. There are two things worth noting here.dddddddddddd First, the team has a very real problem with conceding shots. At each level, they are allowing more shots than the league average. Second, check out the population of red bubbles in front of the Dallas net. Its stunning. So, Dallas defensive problem is at least two-fold: they allow a ton of shots against, and they allow a good portion of those shots against from well inside of the home plate or scoring chance area. Add those two up, combined with maybe a goaltending talent issue as well, and you have a situation where the team has already given up 65 even-strength goals. We can illustrate the opposite, too. Lets look at the Columbus Blue Jackets on another hexagonal bin plot, this one shots for relative to the league average. The Blue Jackets – or whats left of the Blue Jackets, anyway – have scored just 37 even-strength goals, just two more than the Buffalo Sabres. Here, the opposite is true. With Columbus, you have a very real shot generation problem - the team, at each level, creates shots at a rate substantially below the league average. Further, the team is particularly poor in the home plate area. You can almost see the blue bubbles paint out this home plate, the area where most people chart scoring chances for or against. Lets bring in a third team, the seemingly-unbeatable Calgary Flames. By now, the teams inability to generate shots is well documented, and its the impetus behind their brutal 5-on-5 possession numbers - their Score-Adjusted Fenwick% at 46.1 per cent is currently bottom-five in the league. Calgary has been getting by on a 9.12 per cent 5-on-5 shooting rate, almost a point and a half better than last years number. Since we know the teams shot generation is still an issue, is it possible that the team is generating more shots from favourable areas on the ice? Lets pull out last years and this years hexagonal bin plots, to see if theres been any change in shot distance by Flames skaters. We expected the shot generation issues to show on both graphs. But, its also important to observe that the team hasnt really done anything – at least in the shot distance department – to justify a point and a half raise in shooting percentage. What we are likely seeing from Calgary is a variance-favourable run at 5-on-5, one that will likely dry up in the coming months. In the event that Calgary is unable to resuscitate abysmal territorial control, theres still a good chance – despite banking so many points early in the season – that Bob Hartleys team misses the post-season. I was a little disappointed after yesterday, but I knew if I put in a solid round today, I had a chance." The 37-year-old Broce had an even-par 72 at Grande Dunes to take a one-stroke lead over Ryan Helminen. Broce had a 4-under 140 total. "Yesterday, the conditions were a little more benign, but today was a lot different. The wind kept you uneasy," Broce said. "I just got into a plan to hang in there and survive. I got away with a couple bad swings and was able to come back. I just plan to have fun and play golf the next two days and see what happens." Helminen, the PGA teaching professional at Ridgeway in Neenan, Wisconsin, overcame double bogeys on his fifth and sixth holes at Grande Dunes for a 73. "I got a lot out of that round," Helminen said. "When youre 5 over through six holes and going the wrong way and you make a birdie and some par-saving putts, it lifts your spirits." The top 20 Wednesday will get spots in the PGA Championship in August at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky. The 32-year-old right-hander has been dealing with a strain in his lower back and abdominal muscle. He was officially placed on the disabled list March 30 but has been essentially hampered by the injury since spring training. Manager John Gibbon said Janssen is going to throw a bullpen session "very soon." "Hes feeling better but something is still nagging him a little bit," Gibbons said before Friday nights game against the Boston Red Sox. Janssen will likely throw at least two bullpen sessions before another rehab assignment in the minors. "I dont see him back here in the next couple of weeks, to be honest with you," said Gibbons. The manager said while there has been no physical setback, Janssen is still not feeling 100 per cent. "Theres still something there thats holding him back a little bit," Gibbons said. &quoot;Psychologically he doesnt feel quite ready to cut loose because something is just nagging at him there, in his oblique.dddddddddddd" Janssen has seen action in just three games this season, working three innings with a 3.00 earned-run average. The hard-throwing reliever has already had one rehab assignment in the minors cut short after being told to take more time off. Sergio Santos has been operating as the Jays closer in Janssens absence, converting five-of-six save opportunities heading into play Friday. NOTES — First baseman Adam Lind is making progress with his lower-back tightness. Gibbons said Lind, who is on the disabled list, had started swinging the bat ... Gibbons also said the club is having Chad Jenkins operate as a reliever at triple-A Buffalo because thats where it believes he can best serve the major league club ... TORONTO -- Six games into the 2014 season and the Toronto Blue Jays already have two shutouts under their belt. "Thats been a rarity around here," Toronto manager John Gibbons said dryly. "Maybe were on to something." It took the 2013 Jays 53 games to collect that many shutouts. They were 2-4 at this stage. Of course, Toronto (3-3) has also had three games this season in which the pitching staff has surrendered 11-plus hits. The Jays lost all three of those. What does it all mean? That, as Gibbons predicted repeatedly during spring training, Toronto will go as far as its pitching takes it this season. On Saturday, knuckleballer R.A. Dickey outduelled Michael Pineda with late home-run help from Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista as Toronto blanked the New York Yankees 4-0. Dickey (1-1) pitched a gem of the game but Torontos early lack of offence meant the contest was balanced on a knifes edge as he worked to protect a slim 1-0 lead. He was aided by some nifty defence, some of which was his own handiwork. Centre-fielder Colby Rasmus also made two sparkling defensive plays to help blunt New York attacks. "Our defence has been superb to start the year ... Weve played great defence, weve had timely hitting," said Dickey. "Hopefully we can keep pushing forward." The former New York Met has now allowed just one earned run in his last 20 innings against the Yankees. Gibbons, who got the other shutout in Tampa from Mark Buehrle, savoured what he called a bounce back game after 7-2 and 7-3 losses to the Rays and Yankees, respectively. "It was a big game this early in the year," said Gibbons. "(Dickey) stepped up and the bullpen did their thing. "It was good to see the offence open it up late and give us a little breathing room. Thats huge in this game, especially in this ball park." An Adam Lind double and Josh Thole RBI single gave the Jays a 1-0 lead in the second inning. It could have been more but Thole was thrown out trying to take second with Ryan Goins at the plate. Goins subsequent double was wasted. A solo homer by Cabrera and two-run shot by Bautista, both off reliever David Phelps in the eighth, added some insurance for the Jays. It was Cabreras second home run in as many days and Bautistas third of the season. Toronto outhit New York 8-7. Dickey exited with two out and one man on in the seventh, having held the Yankees (2-3) scoreless on five hits. The veteran right-hander struck out six and walked one in a 108-pitch performance that included 69 strikes. "You never know what youre going to get there, you have no idea," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of the knuckleballer. "You have no idea whos going to hit him or not hit him. Its probably the most unpredictable day that youre going to have as a manager." The top of the Yankees order threatened in the eighth with men on first and second with none out against Brett Cecil. The left-hander got two out and then gave way to right-hander Sergio Santos with men on second and third. Santos struck out Alfonso Soriano to preserve the lead for Toronto. Rasmus made a dazzling over-the-shoulder catch of a Francisco Cervelli blast to deep centre in the ninth to deny the Yankees. Santos survived putting two men on in the ninth to record his second save, striking out the red-hot Jacoby Ellsbury to end the game. The afternoon contest drew an announced crowd of 45,446 to Rogers Centre, the second straight sellout under the dome. Pineda (0-1), in his first Yankees start after a lengthy injury absence, gave up one earned run on five hits in six innings. He threw 83 pitches, 58 for strikes, and struck out five with no walks. The 25-year-old Pinedas last big league start was Sept. 21, 2011 as a Seattle Mariner. He was traded to the Yankees after the 2011 season in a deal that sent catcher Jesus Montero to the Mariners. But the 2011 all-star was shelved by a shoulder injury during 2012 spring training. The six-foot-seven 265-pound pitcher from the Dominican Republic returned to action last July, going 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 10 starts in the minors. Dickey lost the season opener 9-2 to Tampa Bay, giving up a career-high six walks in five innings work. He also struck out four. He credited higher velocity for part of the turnaround from the Tampa to Toronto games. "Part of its the pitch, I mean really," he said of the mercurial knuckleball. "And some of its the fact that I was able to climb to those higher velocities today. "But look, youve got to live and die with the pitch. Thats part of what makes it very difficult to do at the big league level and its part of the thing that makes it very special." Cervelli doubled off Dickey to open the third after the first six Yankees went down in order. Dickey struck out the next two Yanks and Rasmus gunned down Cervelli at the plate on a single by Ellsbury. The play survived a review, initiated by the umpiring crew to see whether Thole was blocking the plate. The perfectly placed throw was in front of Thole down the third-base line, meaning the catcher had to step over the plate to get to it. The two collided at the plate but Thole held on to the ball. The Yankees had something going in the sixth with a single and walk and none out. But Dickey, who received his Gold Glove award Friday, hauled in a Carlos Beltran hard liner to trigger a double play. A lineout completed the escape. Yankees veteran Derek Jeter, who was rested Friday, was denied in his bid for a 3,319th career hit which would tie Paul Molitor for eighth on MLBs all-time list and fourth on the AL career list. The Yankees have now gone the first five games of the season without a home run for only the fifth time since 1932. Air Force 1 Herre Norge .500. Atletico fell behind in the 13th minute of the Group A match when defender Arthur Masuaku aimed a left-footed drive past goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who was making his debut for the Spanish club. Striker Kostas Mitroglou unselfishly left the ball to Imbrahim Afellay who made it 2-0 in the 31st. But Mario Mandzukic pulled a goal back before the break, left unmarked to head in a cross from Cristian Ansaldi. Mitroglou scored with a stylish move that proved to be the winner in the 73rd, turning on the ball to beat Oblak, before Antoine Griezmann finally found the net in the 86th for Atletico. Griezmann was twice denied by Olympiakos goalkeeper Roberto -- who joined Atletico as a schoolboy and was loaned out by the club last year to Greece. "This is a huge win for us," said Olympiakos captain Giannis Mantiatis, who recovered from an ankle injury to make the starting lineup. "We had to sweat the whole match. These were very valuable points we got tonight." Atletico coach Diego Simeone watched from the stands at Karaiskaki stadium, as he served a one-match European ban.dddddddddddd "We threatened throughout the game, but Olympiakos was very tough and they got a valuable win," Simeone said. Simeone defended his choice to replace first-choice goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya, arguing that rotation was needed to cope with the domestic and European workload. "What decided the game was that they were more effective with their chances that we were," he said. "Obviously this was a very negative result for us. Clearly Olympiakos is in a good position. What we feel now is a sense of responsibility." Olympiakos coach Michel Gonzalez said his team "successfully disrupted" Atletico. "To beat a team like Atletico, you have to do a lot of things right ... We are a team like (Atletico) and do well against teams that appear to be of higher quality," the Spanish manager said. "Now we have an advantage, to be sure," he said. "All I can say is that we are very happy -- much happier than we were two hours ago." Juventus beat Malmo 2-0 in the groups other game. ' ' '

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens have signed first-round draft choice C.J. Mosley, an All-America linebacker from Alabama, to a four-year deal. The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Mosley was selected 17th overall by the Ravens after winning the Butkus Award as the nations top linebacker. He won two national championships with the Crimson Tide. A versatile playmaker, Mosley made 320 tackles (174 solo), 6 1-2 sacks, had five interceptions -- three returned for touchdowns -- two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 51 career games (29 starts). He is third on Alabamas career tackles list. Mosley is liked to start at inside linebacker in Baltimores 3-4 defence, although the Ravens drafted Arthur Brown in the second round last year for that position. After he was selected, Mosley noted that hes been a Ravens fans for years. "I feel great about it," Mosley said of landing in Baltimore. "Growing up I was a Ravens fan because of Ray Lewis, my favourite linebacker. I got to meet him this past summer going into my senior year. He gave me a lot of insight. In the first series of sanctions handed down by UEFA over its new regulations meant to curb over-spending by wealthy owners, nine clubs in all were handed punishments -- but those given to the Premier League winner and the French champion were by far the heaviest. City said it will accept the sanctions and will not appeal, but insisted that the club has a "fundamental disagreement" with UEFA about its "interpretations of the FFP regulations on players purchased before 2010." PSG also accepted the punishment "in spite of the tremendous handicap they represent in terms of the clubs ability to fully compete on an equal footing against Europes biggest teams." PSG also said in a statement that it "deplores the fact" that UEFA hasnt recognized "the full value" of its partnership with the Qatar Tourism Authority, which the governing body said was inflated. The fines given to City and PSG are the heaviest ever handed by out UEFA. However, UEFA said 40 million euros will be returned to the clubs if they fulfil their financial obligations over the next two years. Those obligations include limiting the deficits to 10 million euros in the financial year ending in 2015 for City, with PSG allowed a deficit of 30 million euros for that period before being obligated to break even by 2016. City said it expects to break even by the end of 2014. UEFA said both clubs have agreed to "significantly limit" their spending in the transfer market over the next two years. However, City said it is allowed to spend 60 million euros, plus whatever it earns for selling players, in this summers transfer window. It said the UEFA sanction "will have no material impact on the clubs planned transfer activity." The reduced Champions League squads may not have much of an impact either. Teams are ordinarily allowed 25-man squads for the competition, but few end up using that many. Cityy and PSG both used 21 players on the field this past season -- not counting unused substitutes.dddddddddddd "Our ambition to build one of the best and most competitive European Football clubs will not be undermined by these measures," said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. "We will continue to invest in developing a highly competitive team and will continue our investments in our stadium and training infrastructures while at the same time remaining, as we are today "debt free." The FFP rules require clubs who play in the Champions League and Europa League to balance their finances, and are meant to curb huge investments by owners and excessive spending on transfers. The sanctions were handed down five years after UEFA President Michel Platini launched the program to tackle "cheating" by overspending. No club was expelled from next seasons Champions League or Europa League, which had been billed as the harshest punishment available. The other clubs to have failed FFP were Galatasaray, Trabzonspor and Bursaspor from Turkey, Russian sides Zenit St Petersburg, Anzhi Makhachkala and Rubin Kazan, as well as Levski Sofia from Bulgaria. Those were handed fines ranging from 200,000 euros -- for Galatasaray, Trabzonspor, Levski and Bursaspor -- to 12 million euros for Zenit. UEFA was expected to rule against Man City and PSG, which far exceeded a limit of 45 million-euro losses over the first two seasons of very complex accounting rules for FFP assessment. Both clubs tried to balance their finances with inflated sponsorship deals linked to their owners in Abu Dhabi and Qatar, respectively. City was also scrutinized for booking tens of millions in revenue from selling image rights and consultancy fees to third parties. Critics of FFP say it was effectively manipulated during UEFAs lengthy consultation with clubs who saw an opportunity to lock out emerging rivals whose new, wealthy owners wanted to spend quickly to join the elite. Clubs such as Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Real Madrid, which have lucrative commercial deals worldwide, will all likely benefit from City and PSG now having to rein in their transfer strategy. Mosley at No. 17 overall and Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan with the 48th selection. The Ravens have been lacking a bit in the middle since losing Ray Lewis to retirement and Dannell Ellerbe to free agency after winning Super Bowl XLVII. Mosley, an instinctive read-and-react linebacker, should hit the ground running next to veteran Daryl Smith. "Hes such a solid football player," NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said when discussing Mosley. "There are some concerns about his shoulder, but he was medically cleared by just about every team. Hes a plug-and-play linebacker in a 3-4 defense. He pursues sideline to sideline. This is a typical Baltimore Ravens solid football player." Jernigan, fell a bit due to a diluted urine sample at the NFL Scouting Combine. He is regarded as a pure three-technique, however, so he may not be a great fit for the 3-4 but he had too much talent for Newsome to pass up. Jernigans teammate with the Seminoles, third-round safety Terrence Brooks, was a solid pick at a position of need and he will be given every opportunity to start opposite Matt Elam next season. The teams other third-round choice, Colorado State tight end Crockett Gilmore, is the pure in-line tight end needed to complement Dennis Pitta and free agent acquisition Owen Daniels. Best Value Pick: Wake Forest wide receiver Mike Campanaro was a nice roll of the dice in the final round. Campanaro is a pure slot receiver who could be something if he pays more attention to detail while running routes. Questionable Calls: As noted Jernigan projects as a pure three-technique and just doesnt have the mass to play inside at nose tackle in Dean Pees 3-4 nor the length to turn into a real option as a five-technique. Summary: More often than not Newsomes moves smack of common sense and with the exception of the Jernigan pick, that was the case again this time around. The Ravens added a potential difference maker at inside linebacker and a prospective starter at safety. If they can figure out how to harness Jernigans natural skills in their scheme, this should turn out to be a home run. McCarron, QB, Alabama; 6 (212) - Marquis Flowers, OLB, Arizona; 7 (239) - James Wright, WR, LSU; 7 (252) - Lavelle Westbrooks, CB, Georgia Southern Top Pick Analysis: The Bengals had a very productive draft, standing pat at No. 24 and landing what some believe was the best cornerback in the draft, Michigan State press-corner star Darqueze Dennard. Beefing up the cornerback position was a key for Cincy because Leon Hall is coming off an Achilles injury and Terence Newman will be 36 by next season. The Bengals were on to something last year at running back by teaming the explosive Giovani Bernard with chain-mover BenJarvus Green-Ellis. The "Law Firm" will be 29 in July, however, so Cincinnati snared his heir apparent in the second round, LSU 235-pounder Jeremy Hill. Third-round defensive end Will Clarke, meanwhile, had the length the Bengals are looking for and will help replace Michael Johnson, who fled to Tampa Bay in free agency. Best Value Pick: Offensive lineman Russell Bodine, a fourth-round choice out of North Carolina, can play all three interior positions and could eventually push Trevor Robinson at center. Questionable Calls: The Bengals have made the playoffs for three consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history, a run that began with the arrival of Andy Dalton at the quarterback position. The "Red Rifle" hasnt been able to get it done in the postseason, however, and until he does the pressure will continue to mount. Getting high-profile Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, who many had rated as a potential second- or third-round choice, in the fifth round may seem like a prudent move but it could also turn up some unnecessary heat on Dalton. Summary: Its rare you can get a talent like Dennard at a need position with the 24th pick so that will help immensely. Cincinnati followed that with a number of logical choices and the McCarron pick could even prove fruitful down the line FINAL GRADE: B+ Undrafted rookie free agent signings: WR Alex Neutz, Buffalo; DL/FB Nikita Whitlock, Wake Forest; FB Ryan Hewitt, Stanford; RB James Wilder Jr.dddddddddddd, Florida State; G Trey Hopkins, Texas; TE Colin Lockett, San Diego State; OL Kevin Palmer, Baylor; S Isaiah Lewis, Michigan State; OL Dan France, Michigan State; RB Jeff Scott, Ole Miss; OT Curtis Feigt, West Virginia University; DE James Davidson, UTEP Cleveland Browns 1 (8) - Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State; 1 (22) - Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M; 2 (35) - Joel Bitonio, OT, Nevada; 3 (71) - Christian Kirksey, OLB, Iowa; 3 (94) - Terrance West, RB, Towson; 4 (127) Pierre Desir, CB, Lindenwood Top Picks Analysis: Trader Ray certainly made his money on draft weekend. First-year Browns general manager Ray Farmer moved up and down three different times in the opening round, eventually snaring Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, as well as a 2015 first-round pick from Buffalo. The good news is that Gilbert could be he best cornerback in the draft and should team with Joe Haden to give the Browns an impressive presence on the edges of their defense, while Manziel could be the answer at the games most important position and is certainly an exciting face for the franchise. The bad news is that by trading out of the No. 4 spot Farmer passed up on two of the four real blue-chip prospects in the is draft -- Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins and Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack -- and the team is also on the verge of losing superstar receiver Josh Gordon for the entire 2014 season due to a drug suspension. Offensive lineman Joel Bitonio of Nevada was the teams second-round pick and could solidify the right guard position or kick out to right tackle eventually. A pair of third-rounders -- inside linebacker Christian Kirksey of Iowa and running back Terrance West -- should also be contributors. Questionable Calls: Passing on Watkins when Cleveland.com reported that several members of the organization knew about Gordons impending suspension for at least a week borders on malpractice. The fact that Cleveland went through the entire draft -- perhaps the deepest WR draft in 20 years -- without taking a receiver is malpractice. "I would tell the fans that are in panic mode because we didnt draft a wide receiver is that patience really tells the tale," Farmer said. "There are plenty of opportunities for us to address what everyone would believe is a need but in our opinion, there is plenty of opportunity to add players, to change the roster and to really make a difference." Summary: Farmer deserves plenty of credit for pilfering the Bills for what could be a top-10 pick next year and if Manziel solidifies the QB position, this draft will be judged a success no matter what. That said, revisionist history cant mask the poor decision-making Farmer and the Browns exhibited in the wake of the Gordon news. FINAL GRADE: C+ Undrafted rookie free agent signings: WR Willie Snead, Ball State; WR Chandler Jones, San Jose State; WR Kenny Shaw, Florida State; FB Ray Agnew, Southern Illinois; QB Connor Shaw, South Carolina; LB Carlo Calabrese, Notre Dame; RB Isaiah Crowell, Alabama State; TE Blake Jackson, Oklahoma State; QB Corey Robinson, Troy; LB Christo Lisika, South Nazarene; OL Anthony Dima, UMass; DL Calvin Barnett, Oklahoma State; S Jacques Washington, Iowa State; LB Greg Blair, Cincinnati; S Jason Hendricks, Pittsburgh; LB Alex Bazzie, Marshall; S Nickoe Whitey, Mississippi State; WR Jonathan Krause, Vanderbilt; OT Michael Philipp, Oregon State; DT Jacobbi McDaniel, Florida State; DB KWuan Williams, Pittsburgh; WR Gerald Ford, Valdosta State; WR Taylor Gabriel, Abilene Christian; S Robert Nelson, Arizona State Pittsburgh Steelers 1 (15) - Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State; 2 (46) - Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame; 3 (97) - Dri Archer, RB, Kent State; 4 (118) - Martavis Bryant, WR, Clemson; 5 (157) - Shaquille Richardson, CB, Arizona; 5 (173) - Wesley Johnson, OT, Vanderbilt; 6 (192) - Jordan Zumwalt, ILB, UCLA; 6 (215) - Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee; 7 (230) - Rob Blanchflower, TE, UMass Top Picks Analysis: The Steelers went all in on the front seven, snaring Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier at No. 15 overall, and following that up with Notre Dame five-technique Stephon Tuitt, a potential value in the second round. Shazier is lightning fast and projects as an all-around linebacker but he will probably need to be protected a bit by a nose tackle who can occupy multiple blockers. Tuitt was regarded as a top-15 talent heading into his junior season with the Fighting Irish but he had an injury-plagued season and was out of shape for much of it. If Tuitt can get his body back on track, Pittsburgh may have something. Third-round running back Dri Archer is a scatback with return ability and a nice complement to big bodies like LeVeon Bell and LeGarrette Blount. Best Value Pick: Daniel McCullers, the teams sixth-round choice out of Tennessee, is a massive defensive tackle who has the raw strength to be a two- down beast as long as he improves on his technique and develops more dedication to the game. Questionable Calls: The 15th overall slot was probably a bit too high for a player like Shazier, who the Steelers project inside. Hell need plenty of help from players like McCullers to keep opposing guards off of him at the second level. Summary: Pittsburgh needed to get younger and more athletic on defense and the team took steps in that direction although the top two choices both come with significant risk. FINAL GRADE: B- Undrafted rookie free agent signings: C Chris Elkins, Youngstown State; TE Eric Waters, Missouri; DE Josh Mauro, Stanford; LB Howard Jones, Shepherd; OL Will Simmons, East Carolina; QB Brendon Kay, Cincinnati; DL Ethan Hemer, Wisconsin; QB Terrance Owens, Toledo; S Jake DeMedal, St. Francis; DB Devon Carrington, Stanford; OT Kaycee Ike, Alabama-Birmingham; DT Roy Philon, Louisville Cheap Buffalo Sabres Gear Wholesale Calgary Flames Jerseys Cheap Adidas Colorado Avalanche Jerseys Montreal Canadiens Outlet Store Wholesale New Jersey Devils Jerseys Adidas Arizona Coyotes Jerseys Cheap Adidas Boston Bruins Jerseys Cheap Adidas Carolina Hurricanes Jerseys Chicago Blackhawks Shop Free Shipping Wholesale Columbus Blue Jackets Jerseys Dallas Stars Shop Free Shipping Cheap Adidas Detroit Red Wings Jerseys Anaheim Ducks Jerseys China Wholesale Edmonton Oilers Jerseys Florida Panthers Shop Free Shipping Wholesale Los Angeles Kings Jerseys Minnesota Wild Outlet Store Cheap Adidas Nashville Predators Jerseys Cheap Adidas New York Islanders Jerseys New York Rangers Winter Classic Jerseys Cheap Adidas Ottawa Senators Jerseys Cheap Adidas Philadelphia Flyers Jerseys Wholesale Pittsburgh Penguins Jerseys Cheap Adidas San Jose Sharks Jerseys St. Louis Blues Winter Classic Jerseys Wholesale Tampa Bay Lightning Jerseys Toronto Maple Leafs Outlet Store Vancouver Canucks Outlet Store Cheap Adidas Vegas Golden Knights Jerseys Cheap Adidas Washington Capitals Jerseys Cheap Adidas Winnipeg Jets Jerseys ' ' '

Kamil Stoch of Poland won the gold medal for the mens individual large hill ski jumping final round with a final score of 278.7 on Saturday at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi Calgarys Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes finished with a total score of 237.9, good for 25th place. Japans Noriaki Kasai claimed the silver medal by hitting a final score of 277.4. Peter Prevc of Slovenia won the bronze finishing with 274.8 points. Stoch, 26, became the third man in Olympic history to win both the normal hill and large hill events. Switzerlands Simon Ammann accomplished the feat in 2010 at the Vancouver Games. Ammann is well finished in 23rd in this event. Finlands Matti Nykanen first accomplished the double gold feat at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. The top 30 jumpers of the qualifying round moved onto the final, but neither of Boyd-Clowes teammates were able to join him. Trevor Morrice of Calgary finished in 42nd with a score of 103.4, jumping 121.5 metres. Matthew Rowley of Red Deer, Alta., was disqualified because his suit was too big, violating competition rules. The scores of the final jump were added to the previous round, making a two-jump total. Stoch, who won gold in the mens normal hill earlier in the Games and entered the event as the world number one. He led all competitors with a score of 143.4, jumping 139 metres, tied for longest in the round and had a second jump of 132.5 metres earning him 135.3 points in the finals. Another disappointing jump saw Austrias Gregor Schlierenzauer well back in 14th after qualifications with 124.6 points and finished in seventh with a final score of 255.2. Schlierenzauer holds the record for most World Cup victories (52), but only has two bronze medals to his name in the Olympics. He finished 11th on the normal hill. Rowleys not the biggest suit in the field Rowleys disqualification surprised Curtis Lyon, the high performance director for Canada Ski Jumping. "The suit was legal the last time we tested it," Lyon said, according to the CBCs Doug Gelevan. Loose suits can create lift, allowing athletes to fly farther. "He definitively doesnt have the biggest suit in the field," Lyon said. "Its not technically cheating in ski jumping, if you look around some of the guys suits are definitively baggier. Maybe they just know how to manipulate them better (in testing) the way they stand, the way they pull it up. "Its definitively a rule management issue. So maybe we have to work with [our athletes] on that." The Winnipeg Goldeyes (15-9) did just that in a 7-4 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (15-9) at Newman Outdoor Field in North Dakota Sunday afternoon. The win is Winnipegs first regular season victory in Fargo since August 2012 and avoids a third consecutive sweep in Fargo to the RedHawks. The Goldeyes scored single runs in each of the first three innings, including a lead-off home run by Ray Sadler in the top of the third inning that gave Winnipeg a 3-1 lead. After Fargo responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game, Winnipeg restored the two-run lead in the top of the sixth. Josh Mazzola singled in Donnie Webb, and Reggie Abercrombie scored on the same play thanks to a throwing error by Fargo third baseman Ronnie Bourquin, who was trying to catch Mazzola in a run down between first and second base. An inning later, Luis Alen dumped a single into centre field, which scored Tyler Kuhn and Jake Blackwood.Fargo tallied a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the RedHawks comeback bid fell three runs shortt.ddddddddddddAlen was Winnipegs leader offensively with three RBI in the game. "Thats what Luis does," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said on the Jewel 101 post-game show. "He puts the ball in play, finds the gaps and gets the big hits with men on base." On the bump, Chandler Barnard went 5 1/3 innings in his Goldeyes debut to get the win. He allowed three runs on six hits. "He has a hard, heavy sinker," Vermilyea said. "Once he established that and threw it over the plate, they didnt put too many good swings on it. He looked good, especially joining a new team in the middle of the season." Kyle Bellamy pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season. Fargos starter Danny Gutierrez suffered the loss for the RedHawks. After playing the Field of Dreams Golf Tournament tomorrow, the Goldeyes begin a six-game homestand Tuesday night against the Grand Prairie AirHogs, who will be making their first visit to Shaw Park. The St. Paul Saints will make their first of three visits to Winnipeg next weekend for the back half of the homestand.
